Mediterranean diet reduces risk of cancer and decreases mortality rate.
Up to date research about beneficial effects on this nutrition discipline taking place in Greece, has established as a fact that this diet reduces cardiovascular mortality risk by 33% and risk on cancer by 24%.
The studies published by the “New England Journal of Medicine” was done by scientists from the Athens and Harvard Schools of Medicine based on research made on 22.043 healthy adults between the ages of 20 and 86 years old.
Each person was subjected to extensive research in order to determine eating habits and a point system was established regarding how close each one of them was to the “Mediterranean diet”
This regime also includes daily consumption of yogurt, all natural cereals and dried fruit, just like moderate wine and a reduced part of red meats.
People that participated in these studies were subject to an approximate follow up of 44 months, in which was determined that those who actively adopted the Mediterranean diet presented major improvement in cardiovascular and presence of cancer related symptoms.
Diverse scientific studies practiced in the last few years had confirmed the virtues of this diet and its positive effect on cardiovascular issues, but the improvement on prevention of cancer is a real novelty.
"The more this diet is followed the less mortality risk is in relation to these conditions” according to Frank Hu, nutrition professor at the Public Health School of Harvard, who also admits that the new advantages over cancer conditions are very intriguing".
